Filtration Experiment

We are doing an experiment to separate two chemicals from a mixture that we make.

Aim: To separate a solution from a precipitate ( Precipitate is the name for a solid that forms into a liquid during a chemical reaction.

Hypothesis: I think that the small particles will pass through the filter and the larger particles won't.

Method:

1. Pour approximately 50 ml of copper sulphate solution into a beaker.
2. Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.
3. Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel
4. Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask.
5. Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.
6. Observe what happened.

Equipment:
Copper sulphate
Conical flask
Stiring rod
200ml beaker
Funnel
Filter paper

Observations:
when the two chemicals mixed it turned blue and bubbled
then when ot went through the filter paper it was completely clear.

Testing for nutrients

Testing Foods

Aim; What nutrients are are present in different foods.

Hypothesis;
We are testing for
Simple sugar- which is carbohydrates that gives you sugar/energy fast.
Complex sugars- Slow releasing energy/sugar.
Protein- Long lasting Energy and sugar.

We are testing;
Bread - I think this will be protein.,
Egg - I think this will be protein.
Glucose- I think this will be a complex sugar.
Apple - I think this will be simple sugar.
Milk - I think this will be Protein.
Potato - I think this will be complex sugar.

(Complex Test)
Equipment; Test tube, food sample, iodine solution.

Method;
1. Place about 2 ml of the sample in a test tube.
2. Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix.

Result-
     +
Observations
Potato- positive
Apple- Positive
Bread- Positive
egg- negative
milk-negative
glucose-negative
Discussion-

Conclusion- The bread and potato was correct but i was wrong with the apple.

Testing for simple sugars.

Aim: To test a sample of food to determine whether it contains simple sugars.

Equipment: Test Tubes, Benedicts solution, a sample of food.

Method:
Step 1- Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and then add 5 drops of benedicts solution.
Step2-Put in a water bath until it changes colour. Do not boil.

Results-
Apple- Positive
potato-positive
Bread-Positive
Milk-Negative
Sugar-Positive
Egg-Positive

Testing for protein.

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.

Hypo:Only the egg will turn purple.

Equipment: Test tube, Sodium hydroxide (haOH), Copper sulfate (coSO), Food sample.

Method:
Step 1- Place about 2 ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.
Step 2- Add 5 drops of copper sulfate.
Step 3-Shake the test tube gently side to side.

Results:
Apple-Negative
Potato-Negative
Bread-Negative
Milk-Positive
Egg-Positive
Sugar-Negative

Conclusion: I was right about all but the potato.

Discussion: They turned purple because they come from animals and all meat has protein in it.
