Hurumanu science introduction

Aim: To learn about  the expected behaviour in a science laboratory.

Our R9 Class Treaty
  1. Bags under desks
  2.    No food or drink
  3.   No running
  4.   Don't touch experiments
  5.  Report any breakages or spills
  6.   Don't taste any or sniff anything
Safety in a laboratory.

  1.   Follow the instructions given to you by the _____ teacher_____ .
  2.   You must not enter the laboratory without your ___teacher_____.
  3.   Report all ________incidents-breakages and spills____ to your teacher.
  4.   You must never eat or drink in a _____science lab_______ .
  5.   __Shoes_____ must be worn at all times.
  6.   If you spill something you should tell your _____teacher____ immediately.
  7.  You should wash your hands after every _____practical__ activity.
  8. You should know what you are doing. If in doubt ____ask__ your teacher.
  9. Never taste or __sniff____ chemicals.
In your group, discuss how the following scenarios could be dangerous.
  1. Not putting your bag under your desk.
  2. Running around in the laboratory.
  3. Not wearing shoes in a laboratory.
  4. Shaking a test tube with your thumb over its mouth?
How do we work in this laboratory?
  1. Beginning and End of class: Lining up, Entry, Seating,
  2. Equipment tray: equipment list and details.

Test tube - This is used  for experiments using liquids. They have a bung that can be placed in the top. Test tubes sit in a test tube rack.

    •  Funnel - used to channel liquids into a smaller container.

    • Measuring Cylinder - This is used to measure liquids for experiments. The liquids will be poured into a beaker or test tube once measured out.

    • Glass Stirring rod - This is a 20cm glass rod used to stir and mix any liquids together.

    • Spatula - This is for holding very small amounts of chemical powders.

    • Test tube tongs - These are used to hold a hot test tube after an experiment.
     Beakers used for measuring
    • Conical Flask - This is used for experiments with liquid up to 150 ml. The flask has a rubber bung for the top and the glass is heat proof.

    Science- Climate change - 2040

Today in class we watched a documentary called 2040 it was about what the world will be like in 2040 if we look after the world better from here on in. We got to look at the positives not so much the negatives as the movie was to help us know what it could be like if we do our best to prevent the bad stuff from happening. We got to look at our world now and what it will be like in 20 years.

I learnt that if we started using public transport the roads would become more open to the people walking and would create less fossil fuels which would be better for the environment. I also learnt that if we use a different type of energy it would impact the environment in a good way.

In 2040 I would like to see less cars on the road and more trees planted around rather then cutting massive amounts down like we seem to be doing now.

What surprised me was that cows have a big impact on the climate change, when my teachers told me I still didn't think it was that bigger deal.

The thing that excited me was that the world might have some really fun ways of transport.

The thing that worried me was that if we don't start changing our ways the world won't end up the way it did in the movie and that it will become alot worse than it is now.

    The bone tiki- reading- Update.

These are some of the updated reading tasks that I have been working on for reading this week, I liked some of these tasks but others not so much. Im enjoying the book more than I was before  because it has gotten to the part where he is on the run which is making it alot more fun to read.

    Art-stop motion

This is my really bad art work I hate it and I hate art.
Im making a teenage boy and it fits into my story because hes the main character and he was being nice to the older lady by offering to help her. I'm finding everything challenging because I don't like clay at all.

    Math DLO

This is the work that I have done the past 2 weeks for math. I enjoyed this for the most part but some I found tedious and not very fun.

    Solar energy

Aim: To find out which colour attracts the suns heat.

    Hypothesis: Black

    Materials:

    1.  2 x styrofoam cups
    2.  tin foil
    3. Plastic cup
    4. heat lamp
    5.  white paper

    Steps

      1.   Get the materials
      2.  Put the tin foil inside a cup and also put black paper around another cup.
      3.  Put water inside all of the 3 cups.
      4.  Shine the  light onto all 3 of the cups.
      5.  Wait for 15 minutes then put a thermometer inside all 3  cups and see the tempter.
      6. Record the tempter
      7.  Wait another 30 minutes then see the results after that.
      8. Record the tempter
      9.  Then wait 45 minutes and then see  the results after that.
      10. Record the temperature for the final results.

     Findings:

This is a photo of cups and a light and different shades to see which one gets hotter.

    Conclusion

The black cup was the hottest as I had predicted but the other cups were alot colder than I expected.
