Positive aspect of this year

This year my school gave me the opportunity to join Project K. This is a program in which you go on a three-week journey starting from Windy point then tramping + biking back through the gates of Hornby High.  I recommend that anybody who is given the opportunity should take it. It was extremely difficult but I still enjoyed it.

Passion Projects- Finished Product

For the past 4 weeks, we have been working on something called passion projects, one of my passions is sewing so I decided to create a quilted blanket. To make the blanket I used fleece and scrap material from the school textiles class. I had to cut the scraps into squares then together them, and finally to the fleece backing. I finished my blanket last week but I lost the blanket and I have no photos however it looked similar to this

NZ descrimination

This week we have looked at Jacinda Adern apologising for the Dawn Raids, A girl named Zeinab and her story, and finally Simu Liu's post about Asian hate. I have learnt a lot about racism and discrimination and learnt that there's so much more out there than I had thought. Before this week I had never even heard of the dawn raids. So im glad that I know and understand more about rasicm.

Reduction Prints

In art this term we have been looking at block printing and reduction prints, first we started off by drawing images inspired by Sonia Terk Delaunay, then we created our very own image.

Method:

  • Draw on a piece of lino the image/pattern you want
  • Use lino cutting tools to carve in your design.
  • Cover the lino in ink starting with a light shade.
  • Press the lino onto a clear piece of paper, turn it over then rub a spoon over the paper to press the ink down.
  • Then cut off whatever shapes/pieces you want to that first colour of ink.
  • Cover the lino in a darker shade of ink and repeat this until you have 3 layers/colours of ink on your paper.

Camp

 Yr 10 Camp Blog

Greetings,

Last week (22-25 June) Yr 10s trekked off on an Outdoor Ed. trip to Boyle River.

As soon as we arrived, we had a conversation about safety and expectations, then we went into our camp groups and played some ‘get to know you’ activities.

For breakfast we had toast.

Dinner consisted of Macaroni and cheese, nachos/chilli and chicken fried rice.

We slept in bunk rooms, I shared a room with Mya, Paige, Chloe, Daisy and some of the year 13 leaders.

We had a range of indoor and outdoor activities which included going on a walk in nature, shelter building, swamp crossing, fire starting, the amazing race, flying kiwi, orientering, night line and solo.

The best experience I had on camp was going on a walk in nature because that reminded me of Project K, I also enjoyed the night line and solo although they got boring in the end because it lasted too long.

I was most challenged by the long get to know you activities, there were too many and they became unnecessary.

Staff involved on camp carried out a range of duties which included keeping us in line and safe, setting up activities, running the whole camp ect.

Overall camp wasn’t as bad as I expected but it was still not great as it was cold, loud and too crowded, I did however like the night times and when we got to go on walks.

Litter Clean Up

 Litter Clean Up

Today in social studies we picked up rubbish from all over the school to help the eco-warriors, I was surprised to see how much rubbish was everywhere and the range of rubbish that was there from plastic to socks!  I hope that people will get better and discarding their rubbish in the future.

Screen printing-Textiles

In textiles we were doing screen printing, we drew a design on paper, I chose the Nirvana logo, then we cut it out using a craft knife. Once that was done we used a screen, textiles paint, and a squeegee, then pulled the paint on the screen using the squeegee to create our design.

Live Aid

Live Aid

In the 1970s Bob Geldolf was the lead singer of the Boomtown rats.  He became famous for their song ' I don't like Mondays, which was a song about a school shooting. Bob Geldolf was involved in promoting charitable events for the developing world and more specifically Africa.

Midge Ure was a Scottish singer involved in multiple bands.  He was famous for being the frontman for Ultravox and the song he and Bob Geldolf co-wrote the song called ' Do they know its Christmas' Midge Ure was involved in organizing and forming the benefit concert, Live Aid 1985.

Do They Know It's Christmas

Bob Geldolf wrote the song ' do they know it's Christmas' because the kids in Ethiopia didn't get to experience Christmas, so they wrote about how they don't know what/how people in other environments experience Christmas.

Micheal Mew

In art we have been looking at an artist called Micheal Mew, he does work with lots of different images combined to make leading lines and to have a focal point. Leading lines are exactly that, the lines that lead you to the main image, and the focal point is the main image. This is an example of his work.
     9
For our own work, we had to take magazine images and combine them then add some drawings and paint over them, I have added my thumbnail sketches and my final product.

Before paint

                                                          My final image.

Acid Rain Experiment

Acid Rain Experiment

What is acid rain? Acid rain is when the air gets so polluted with fossil fuels it gets absorbed by the clouds and comes out in an acidic form when it rains, it is environmentally harmful.

Aim: To observe effects of acid rain

Hypothesis: Petal- dry out calcium carbonate- become liquid apple-dry out, universal indicator- get dark bromothymol blue- lighten.

Method: In a petri dish place items around weigh boat which is in the middle of the dish, wet-dry ingredients with a drop of water.  Add a spatula of sulfate to weigh boat, add 5 drops of sulfuric acid. quickly close.

observation: bromothymol blue is turning yellow/orange, the universal indicator is turning pink, the petal is getting slightly lighter. I think it's because acid eats way at things so it diluted the colour.

Beatlemania

The Beatles traveled to Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin, and Christchurch during their New Zealand tour in 1964.

This is a link for the song 'She loves you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S302kF8MJ-I&ab_channel=GuitarDocs

It sounds different to music in the '40s mainly because it's more upbeat, it was new and older music is more on the classical side.

My weekend

During the weekend I stayed at Paige's, it was quite boring because Paige is boring, she was babysitting so we didn't do much but we played a board game and watched movies, we also started annoying some people from school, because we were bored. Then on Sunday, I went out for lunch with my father. That was all I did, it was relatively boring.

Athletics Day- Reflection section

Last Thursday we had athletics day, Paige. Mya and I are all in Tieke and our house colour is red, so we dressed up in red clothing. For our events we had discus, long jump, high jump and a 60-metre sprint, we missed long jump and discus because we didn't know what our times were but went to high jump and the 60-metre sprint. Because we were in social athletics and not competitive, we didn't have many activities to go to, so we mainly just watched the other people run. Towards the end of the day they had relays, first, it was each Kahui vs each other and in the end it as the seniors vs the teachers, which was the most interesting part of it all. In the end, I think Mohua won and Tieke came second.

Atomic Science: Periodic Table

What does the periodic table show us?

The periodic table shows us the elements, it is arranged by their atomic numbers and electron configuration

What is a mass number? It shows us the mass number which is the number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus.

What is an atom? An atom is a very small particle that makes up everything around us, it consists of three particles, electrons, protons, and neutrons.

What are alkali metals?  An alkali metal is any of the six chemical elements that make n Group 1 of the periodic table. It's the first collum on the periodic table-  lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), cesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). They react with other elements because they want to get rid of the one-electron they have.

What happened during the demonstration? The teacher put lithium into the water and it changed the colour, then she used sodium and it created a small fire on the water but in the end, it made a small explosion.

Culture

Day of the dead

How is this celebrated?
day of the dead is a Mexican holiday held on November 1 and 2. The holiday involves family and friends gathering to pray for and remember family and friends that have passed.
Who is it celebrated with?
This holiday is celebrated in Mexico, with friends and family.

Why is this important to celebrate?
The point is to demonstrate love and respect for deceased family members.

Christmas

How is this celebrated?
It is celebrated differently by everyone. For me in New Zealand, it is celebrated by spending time with family, having food sometimes giving presents, and just in general, a time for your whole family to get together. It is often celebrated with Christmas trees or at least that's part of it, for some children Santa comes and delivers them presents, those are some of the traditions that come with a lot of Christmases.
Who is it celebrated with?
Family and sometimes friends.

Why is this important to celebrate?
For some, it's about religion for others it's just a nice time of year to get together with friends and family and celebrate something.

Personal Values

FROM THE VALUES YOU CHOSE, WRITE ABOUT THE TWO THAT ARE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU

WHY IS THIS VALUE IMPORTANT TO YOU?

RECALL A MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE WHEN YOU REALLY ‘LIVED’ THIS VALUE.

IF THIS VALUE IS NOT BEING RESPECTED BY OTHERS, HOW MIGHT YOU FEEL OR REACT?

Letting go of fears It means I would be less nervous When I didn't check the lock on the door multiple times before going to sleep. Not sure, It doesn't affect me if others don't follow this.
Finding meaning in existence To me, if I can't find meaning in existence there's no point in living.  ? Also doesn't affect me.

Parihaka

Parihaka lyrics

What is the main message of this song?

Staying peaceful during the destructive times.

What line explains their passive resistance method?

I know Te Whiti will never be defeated,

And even at the darkest hour,

His presence will remain.

I'll sing to you the song of Parihaka.

What does ‘you can’t pull out the roots’ refer to?

It refers to family, they can take your home but they can’t change your family, ancestors, and your culture.

How does this song show the significance of Parihaka?

It shows what they thought of the situation.

What makes an event Significant? When it has a big impact on someone or something whether it’s good or bad.

Reflection Section- My Week

My week was far from interesting, I have been to school which isn't great but it's okay.
Every day is kind of the same, I go to school, go to my classes which depending on the day it can be good but usually, my classes aren't anything great. Then I go home and do nothing yet again and that has pretty much been my week, the few classes that I do enjoy are textiles and social studies, in textiles we have been creating colour wheels which is fun to a degree and in business studies we have been designing t-shirts, mines based off Lana DelRey.

Music through time - Spirituals

A spiritual is a form of religious song, they were sung in informal gatherings of slaves in praise houses and outdoor meetings, called "bush arbor meetings" or "camp meetings".

Harriet Tubman created the underground railroad to help slaves escape, she created the song Wade in the water- with the secret message saying to go through the water to remove your sent so the dogs can't track you.

Wade in the water   - Telling you to go to the water and swim away
Wade in the water
Children wade, in the water
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in red
Wade in the water
Must be the children that Moses led
God's gonna trouble the water
Wade in the water, wade in the water children
Wade in the water,
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in white
Wade in the water
Must be the children of the Israelite
Oh, God's gonna trouble the water
Wade in the water, wade in the water children
Wade in the water,
God's gonna trouble the water
Who's that young girl dressed in blue
Wade in the water
Must be the children that's coming through,
God's gonna trouble the water, yeah
Wade in the water,

Unwind

How do you think this story will be written?  I think this story will be written in third person. I also think this will be able one person trying to do something or escape somewhere.

Why do you think the story is entitled as it is? I think it's because it sounds kind of mysterious so you have to read it to understand.

Where do you think the story will take place? someplace quiet and away from the city.

What time period do you think the story is set? 1940s

Multiple Intelligences test

Multiple intelligences is all about the different aspects of intelligence, I will include a picture of them. Just because you aren't smart in math doesn't mean you aren't smart you're just smart in something else.

A lot of people think intelligence is all about English, math, and science, and those are part of it but there's more to it, nature, music, and many more.

My strengths are 'Musical', 'Intrapersonal', and 'Linguistic' are my top three. I need to improve my 'Logical-Mathematical' and ' Bodily Kinesthetic'
